Mr Nicholas Fischer
Nicholas is a distinguished General Surgeon born and raised in Hamilton, New Zealand. With a passion for healthcare, he began his medical journey at the University of Otago, earning his Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery in 2010. His dedication and exceptional skills led him to be selected into the New Zealand General Surgical Training Program in 2014.
Nicholas spent five years as a senior registrar, gaining extensive experience across various hospitals in New Zealand. In 2019, he was awarded the Fellowship in General Surgery by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. His quest for knowledge and excellence did not stop there; he sought additional post-fellowship training in Trauma Surgery and Emergency General Surgery in Auckland, and specialised in Hepatobiliary and Liver Transplantation at the New Zealand Liver Transplant Unit.
Nicholas further honed his expertise in the United Kingdom, where he worked with the Basingstoke & North Hampshire NHS Trust, a leading Hepatobiliary unit that has pioneered liver surgery in the UK. He also contributed to the high-volume Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic unit at the Royal Surrey NHS Trust, gaining invaluable experience in complex surgical procedures.
Bringing his wealth of experience back home, Nicholas accepted a consultant position at Dunedin Public Hospital, specializing in General, Hepatobiliary, and Pancreatic Surgery. His leadership skills were recognized with his appointment as the Co-Director of Trauma at Dunedin Public Hospital.
Nicholas is committed to advancing medical knowledge and has contributed to 14 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles. He is also a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Otago, where he inspires and educates the next generation of surgeons in the Surgical Sciences Division of Dunedin Medical School.
